How do I lower high cholestorol?

I recently went to my doctor to find that I have high cholestoral. My doctor has perscribed vessel care, ( a comprehensive homocysteine formula) and Lipitor. I am reluctant to take these two products because I've heard that they can lead to kidney damage. How can I lower my cholestoral naturally? By the way, I work out three to four times a week, and I'm African-American. Are there any foods that are good for lowering bad cholestorol?
